RESOLUTION
New Delhi, the 19th December, 2002
No.6/8/99-EPZ - The Government of India have announced a scheme in the Export and Import Policy for setting up of Special Economic Zones in the country to promote exports. The policy provides that Special Economic Zone may be set up in public, private, joint sector or by State Government as notified by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The existing Export Processing Zones may also be converted into Special Economic Zones.
2. Accordingly, Government of India has decided to convert the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ), Chennai, in the State of Tamil Nadu into Special Economic Zone. The Zone would be entitled to operate under the policy and procedure notified by Government of India/State Government for SEZs.
3. The Zone will continue to be under the administrative control of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Department of Commerce) and the Development Commissioner will be in charge of the day to administration.
4. The conversion will take with effect from 1-1-2003.
